Alton C.
Mather
d. Jan 16, 2017
Alton C. Mather age 95, died on Monday, January 16, 2017 at his home. He was born on December 28, 1921 in the Prairie du Sac to Swain and Cora (Graf) Mather and grew up on the family farm. Alton attended UW-Madison and shortly thereafter the family farm was taken in 1942 so Badger Ordnance Works could be built. The family moved to Columbus where Alton farmed and remained a lifelong resident. He met and was married to Bernetta Soelle on January 9, 1943 in Madison. As a couple, they traveled internationally to Asia, China, Central and South Americas, to name a few. Alton was an active community philanthropist and volunteer serving on various committees and boards including the Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus Popcorn Wagon Inc, and many years as a member (now honorary) of Rotary International where he was past treasurer and secretary. Early in Alton's life he had an interest in flying and did so when he could. At one time he was a member of the Flying Farmers Club. He later built his own airplane and airport, aptly named Math-Aire Field. He also enjoyed fishing and investing. Survivors include his son Tim (Christy) Mather of Boulder CO and his daughter Sally (Frank) Kotsonis of Brookfield; three grandchildren Tyler (Rysha), Steven (Keagan) and Karly (Cameron); four great granddaughters Eliana, Kaitlyn, Ivey and Layla; nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2010; a brother Myron. Private family services were held on Friday, January 20, 2017. Rev. Sam Batt officiated. Entombment was in Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbus-Fall River Rotary Club.
