Dorothy M.
Hasey
Jan 24, 1933 — Nov 2, 2025
Columbus
Dorothy M. Hasey, age 92, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025 at Columbus Health and Rehab, Columbus. She was born on January 24, 1933 to Harry Arthur Bennett and Helen (Magdalena Wilhelmine Dorothea Prien) Bennett in Columbus.
Dorothy attended Columbus High, graduating in 1951, after which she went to secondary education at Columbia County Teacher's College (County Normal) in Columbus. While attending school, she worked every summer at the Arlington Canning factory. Upon graduation, she became the highest paid new teacher in Columbia County ($360/month), and started teaching in a one-room school house (Jacob Lowe School). This extravagant salary came with conditions: she needed to be available 7 days a week, must dress modestly, and was not allowed to frequent drinking establishments. There were many stories of riding her horse "Jimmy" to school, shoveling paths, picking up firewood to light the stove in the morning, and taking her classes on excursions to pick hemp (for rope) and milkweed (for parachutes) to support the war effort.
She was married to Floyd Hasey on Sept. 7, 1957 in Rio, and they settled on the family farm in Hampden to grow crops and raise pigs and chickens. Dorothy gave up teaching to be a farm wife, and raised 3 boys: Jim, Tim & Ryan. When not doing farm activities, she was active in the community and church, being a member of DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), and working on several community boards (and carting 3 boys to extra-curricular school activities). She also loved working extensively on family genealogy, tracing our family roots back to the 1600's. She and Floyd took their first vacation (more than one night) on their 25th anniversary and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2007. After selling the farm, Floyd & Dorothy moved to Columbus, and took many trips, gaining friends from all over. And never, ever was she without a camera (although her finger is in many of the photos).
But Dorothy's real passion in life was music. Starting on piano and clarinet as a child, she later gave accordion lessons, but her greatest feat was being a dedicated organist for 70 years. She played organ at various churches and functions until the delicate age of 90. And no story about Dorothy would be complete without mentioning her two other passions: PURPLE and CARDINALS!
Dorothy is survived by her three sons: James (Jimmie Walker) Hasey, Tim (Kay Caldwell) Hasey, and Ryan (Lisa) Hasey; two grandchildren Kayla Hasey and Mitchell (Ashley) Hasey; other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband Floyd in 2015; stepbrother Walter Prien; stepmother Clara.
