Obituary

On March 22, 2024, Duane "Dick" Mortimer passed away just shy of his 103rd birthday. He was born June 19, 1921 in Mortimer Valley, Wonewoc, WI. Dick was married to Beth Lawsha who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughters Jane (John) McGill, Highland Village, Texas and Sue (Doug) Erlacher, Mequon, Wisconsin. Proud grandfather to Christopher, Craig and Stephanie McGill, Greylen Mardy, Victoria Kline and nine great grandchildren.

A World War II Pacific Theater veteran and Badger Honor Flight participant, he exemplified the best characteristics of his Greatest Generation. A consummate gentleman with a heart of gold, his life was defined by the values of honesty, trust, hard work, gratitude, and compassion. Dick was ever ready to share his time, talent and wisdom. His unconditional love for family, friends and Columbus was obvious to all. Dick was a dedicated educator as a teacher. Later, he proved to be an innovative leader and manager as principal and, ultimately, Superintendent of Columbus Public Schools. Perhaps his greatest gift was the ability to teach life lessons by example without a textbook. He was also a committed community volunteer and leader, 32nd degree Mason and, within his beloved Kiwanis, eventually served as Governor for Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. A dedicated husband, dad and grandfather, he was and is someone never to be forgotten.

Dick's family wishes to thank those who provided the thoughtful and tender care that made the last chapter of his life dignified and peaceful. We are most grateful for the staff of At Home Again and Hospice Care, Joan Duffy, Doctors Sam and Rolf Poser, the Poser Clinic, Heidi Smedahl at U.W Hearing Clinic and Prairie Ridge Health.

There will be a private celebration of life with immediate family. Inurnment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus. Remembrances and donations may be directed in Dick's memory to Prairie Ridge Health or the charity of your choice.
