Hy
Lange
d. Oct 29, 2018
COLUMBUS—Hyacinth "Hy" Alice Lange, age 97 died on Monday October 29, 2018 at Home Again Assisted Living in Columbus. She was born on September 12, 1921 to Henry and Martha (Filips) Hendricks in Crofton, Nebraska. She was the oldest of nine children and grew up in a predominantly Catholic farming community. Hy was the valedictorian of her high school class and received a scholarship to pursue a degree in education. While in college her family moved to Wisconsin for better opportunities given the adversity in farming during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl in rural Nebraska. Homesick for her family, Hy moved to Wisconsin midway through college. She finished her education degree at the Columbia County Normal Teachers College in Columbus. She taught two years in a one-room schoolhouse and then met Lelon Lange. Lelon and Hy were married on June 24, 1943 in the Town of Elba. Hyacinth supported Lelon in the farm business milking cows and delivering milk for Milo Lange Dairy. In 1954, Lelon and Hy sold the dairy cows and began raising beef cattle, hogs and cash crops. On the Lange Century Farm, Hy and Lelon raised three children, June and the twins Robert and Elizabeth. Education, honesty and hard work were valued by both Hy and Lelon. Hyacinth's biggest love and gift in life was her family. She treasured her grandchildren and all the fun memories made playing countless games of Uno and later Euchre, serving "nutritious" Crackling Oat Bran cereal and marking everybody's annual growth height on the wall in the den! Grandma Hy loved to hold, cradle and gently rock the grandchildren and her eleven great grandchildren with deep love and warmth. She will be missed by all of us. She is survived by her children, June (Thomas) Waterworth of Fall River, Robert (Kay) Lange of Columbus, Elizabeth Lange of Westby; six grandchildren Douglas (Colleen) and Kirk (Donna) Waterworth; Aaron (Emily) Bland, Robin (Logan) Bender; Annika Lange (Derek Metzger); Brittany (Billy) Allestad; eleven great-grandchildren Emma, Thomas, Megan and Corrin Waterworth; Dylon, Tenley and Tate Allestad; Grant and Emery Metzger; Mara Bland and Ivy Bender; one sister Janice Erieau of Columbus OH; two sisters-in-law Joyce Hendricks and Donna Hendricks; one brother-in-law John Tramburg and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1987; infant son Phillip; three sisters Harriet Woodward, Hildred Tramburg, and Donna Mae Schultz; four brothers Sylvester "Bud", Harvey, Dale and Cecil Hendricks. Funeral services were held at 12:00 P.M., with visitation beginning at 10:30 A.M., on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the COLUMBUS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, with Rev. Kimberly Brumm officiated. Interment was held at Hillside Cemetery in Columbus. A special thanks to Home Again Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care. Memorials may be made to Home Again Assisted Living, Columbus Community Hospital Foundation or the Columbus United Methodist Church.
