Jeanne
Hiney
Feb 22, 1932 — Jun 2, 2024
Jeanne L. Hiney, age 92, died at home in Columbus on Sunday, June 2, 2024. She was born to Arthur and Dorothy (Trachte) Weiner on February 22, 1932 in Columbus.
Jeanne was a graduate of Columbus High School in 1949 and the Columbia County Teachers College in 1951. She married Richard J. Hiney on October 18, 1952. Soon after they had a son, Kim and two girls, Nancy and Suzanne. She was a member of Saint Jerome Catholic Church in Columbus. Jeanne was a friend and volunteer extraordinaire. Starting St. Jerome Home and School Association with Mary Lea Kempka and many others was a highlight for sure. She was known for her hard candy and running the candy booth at the Pancake Breakfast. As her children grew Jeanne started working as
a teacher's assistant beginning at Fuller St. and then moving over to the Columbus Middle School for the rest of the 39 years she spent working for the Columbus School District. Jeanne had to learn to get on a plane when she had two granddaughters born in Alaska. She spent every summer visiting them and seeing the state. She loved coming back to Columbus and sharing Alaskan stories to the students in the classroom. The children were her reason to get-up and go to work after Dick died. Even in the end she felt she should be working with some children who needed her help. Jeanne survived a life-threatening illness in 2012 which left her with no short-term memory and we will always admire the years she spent trying to find meaning and motivation to continue her life under these extraordinary circumstances.
Jeanne is survived by her son Kim Hiney of Columbus; daughters Nancy Hiney of Anchorage, AK and Suzanne (Carl) Black of Anchorage AK; granddaughters Jessica (Talon) Pope, Katie (Joe Harris) Black; sister Eileen Rutherford; other relatives and friends. Jeanne is preceded in death by her parents; husband Richard in 1991; sisters Marillyn Syftestad, Suzanne Weiner, Judith Dauman; brother Donald Weiner; brothers-in-law Paul Syftestad, James Rutherford, Ronald Dauman; sister-in-law Phyllis Weiner.
Everyone is welcome to join us in prayer at Hillside Cemetery, Columbus at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 17, 2024. A celebration of Jeanne's life will follow at the Columbus Country Club at Noon. Bring your stories to share and enjoy some food and drink with Kim, Nancy and Suzanne. Memorials may be directed to the Columbus Club House or the Special Olympics.
A special thank you to Drs. Rolf, Sam and Mike Poser and their staff; Bristol Hospice and especially Julanda, her special helper.
