Martha
Elling
d. Jan 26, 2019
Softly and tenderly Jesus welcomed Martha Lou (Jewett) Elling to heaven on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Born November 7, 1934 to Adelaine Mae (Myers) and Earnest Edward Jewett, moments after her twin sister Mary, in Santa Monica, California. Martha grew up in the San Fernando Valley with Mary and her older sister Nancy. She graduated from Hollywood High and UC Santa Barbara. As a PE teacher at Los Angeles Lutheran HS she attended a New Year's Eve party on December 31, 1958 where she met Henry August Elling, a music teacher from Dominguez HS. They went to the Rose Bowl Parade together the next day and were married 361 days later on December 27, 1959, at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Santa Monica CA by Henry's father, Rev. H.J. Elling. Henry persuaded Martha to move to his home state of Illinois in 1963 where she supported him as loving wife and mother to their four children. Their marriage lasted over 50 years until Henry's death on October 10, 2010. Staying in Chicago and Rockford for the majority of their adult lives, they camped across most of the United States with their children and shared three tours of Europe (two of them with dozens of Lutheran high school students in Henry's choirs). Martha worked hard throughout her life for the good of her family. She always expected and sought the best effort from her children in school and in life, and was quick to reward accomplishment. Martha joins her husband, Henry August, and son John Edward, her parents, sister Nancy Dee Erday and many in-laws (and outlaws) in God's glory. There she will wait somewhat impatiently for her sister Mary Elizabeth Burrus Fidler (Hemit CA), in-laws Robert and Joann Taube (Moline IL), children Henry Jewett (Cathy) Elling (Columbus WI), Suzanne (Rev. Gregory) Alms (Catawba NC), Kurt August (Jennifer) Elling (New York City) and daughter-in-law Kerry Elling (Celebration FL). She wanted everyone to know how proud she was and always will be of her grandchildren Amanda, Ajax, Emma, Hannah, Henry Craig, Katie (and her husband Jonathan Rudy), Lillie, Luiza, Mitchell, Natalie, Rebecca, and her great-granddaughter Miriam Louise Rudy. A remembrance service will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Geneseo, Illinois with lunch to follow. Inurnment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. For friends in the Columbus area an open house was held at Henry and Cathy's home on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 4 :00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. We would especially thank the gracious, loving and patient staff of At Home Again, Randolph Health Services, and Hillside Hospice for their time and efforts over the past four years.
