Obituary

Phyllis J. Hamann age 88, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at Sun Prairie Senior Living in Sun Prairie. She was born on August 24, 1936 in Columbus to Julius and Clara (Disterhaft) Frey, and grew up in Fall River. Phyllis was married to Eugene Hamann on September 17, 1955 and together raised four children on a dairy farm in Columbus.

Phyllis will be remembered most for her love of cooking, hospitality, and entertaining friends and family. She was always in search of the latest culinary invention, and creative recipe. She was active in her Homemakers group her entire life, and was excited when it was her turn to host.

In her 40s she went back to school and received a degree in Baking from Moraine Park Technical College. She was most proud of her career at the Dodge County Detention Facility, where she started as a Cook/Matron, and was eventually promoted to Corrections Officer, where she worked until she retired.

She appreciated the simple things in life. She often talked about how it was so important to her that each of her children receive swimming lessons, and at least one new bike, things she never had growing up. In addition she made sure her children had every opportunity to be involved a variety of interests including 4-H, art, piano and organ lessons, sports, horses, showing farm animals at the Dodge County Fair, and playing musical instruments in band.

Phyllis was forever grateful to receive the gift of life from a wonderful family in Oshkosh, and was a 26-year organ transplant survivor from UW Hospital.

Survivors include her two sons Gregory Hamann of Marshall, Randall (Jean) Hamann of Columbus; her daughter Kari Hamann of Madison; three grandchildren Joshua Hamann, Jenni Hamann, Joseph Hamann; two great granddaughters Camille and Jaelynn; one brother Eugene (Connie) Frey of Columbus; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1980; her daughter Lori in 1981; sister and brother-in-law Deloris and George Behrendt.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., with visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M., on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at Jensen Funeral & Cremation, Columbus. Rev. Sandra Schieble will officiate. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus.
