Obituary

COLUMBUS—Sidney A. Berndt, age 65, died on Monday, November 20, 2023 at the UW Hospital, Madison. He was born on March 14, 1958 to Delmar and Addie (Wynn) Berndt Sr. in Columbus. He was married to Cheryl England on August 24, 1979 at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Columbus and together raised four children. He was a self-employed farmer of dairy cows and beef cattle in rural Columbus with his family and for a short time was employed for Oscar Mayer in Madison where he served as union steward. Sid loved the outdoors whether it be fishing (get the net!), deer hunting or turkey hunting. Camping on the farm was a special time, especially at the end of the day around the campfire watching the sunset.

Sid opened his home and life to anyone who needed help. Through the years, Sid was a great mentor and coach in teaching work ethics, hunting tips, life guidance, and advice to his children and grandchildren as well as so many other youths including many of his nieces and nephews. He believed in "Work hard, Play Hard" and often said "Go Big or Go Home". Much of his family and friends would help on the farm, including baling hay in the summers when Sid was known for his homemade Mt. Dew Lemonade. He was known for enjoying finding bargains at sales and bringing his treasures home, of which he shared much of those with his granddaughter Ava. Family and friends were everything to Sid.

Survivors include his wife Cheryl of Columbus; his three daughters Amanda Berndt (Chad Baerwolf) of Columbus, Angela (Pat) Clevenger of Columbus and Alicia Derouin of Madison; his son James Berndt of Columbus; his four grandchildren Jaimee, Ava, Alia and Evan; his two sisters Reida Holleman of Beaver Dam and Jenny (Tim) Pagel of Columbus; his two brothers Delmar Berndt Jr. (Rhonda Dean) of Rio and Stanley Berndt (Susan) of Fall Creek; father-in-law Merlyn England; special friend Patrick Derouin; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law Maurene England.

The family would like to thank Prairie Ridge hospital-Columbus, St. Mary's hospital-Madison, Froedtert hospital-Milwaukee and UW-Madison for their care of Sidney over the years.
