Willard Joseph Weiss

January 31, 1929 to February 15, 2023

Son, brother, husband, dad, grandfather, great grandfather, pilot,

Very very proud Korean War US Army Captain and Veteran.

Lived life for 94 years.

Willard Joseph Weiss, son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and patriot, joined the angels on February 15 2023. He lived his 94 years to their fullest. Willard joins his wife, Jean, his parents, John and Agnes, his brothers Raphael, Delbert, and Jack, relatives and friends in Heaven. Willard leaves his daughters, Rhonda Jane Warren, Shelley Joan Weiss (Brownie Ehlers), Jillann Jennifer Keip (Robert Keip), and son, Bradley Joseph Weiss (Naomi Van Auken) to enjoy memories of travels and good times.

Willard was born and spent his early years in South Dakota. After graduating from Redfield High School, where he met his future wife, Jean, Willard joined the South Dakota Army National Guard. This led to his 20-year career with the military which gave the family opportunities to move around the country. He finished his time in the Army with the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division in Wisconsin and he and his family settled in Columbus, Wisconsin. Willard was always proud of the achievements of his children, his grandchildren, Miranda, Lindsay, Christian, Nora, Maxwell, and his great grandchildren, Bridger, Bowie, Remy, and Aster. Willard accomplished much in his 94 years. He rose to the rank of Captain in the Army, became a private pilot, was instrumental in developing the first airport in Redfield, SD, and the flying club in Columbus. He held numerous leadership roles in the Rural Electric Association, American Legion, Kiwanis, and Wally Byam Caravan Club, and was active in the Experimental Aircraft Association throughout his life. For many years he drove dignitaries in the 4th of July parade and was active in the Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs in Columbus. He earned many awards, including being named as a Hometown Hero by the Wisconsin Legislature. Willard took great pride in creating and maintaining the Columbus Community Veterans Memorial, which he visited frequently. The Memorial will stand as a lasting tribute to his dedication to service to his family, community, and country. Willard quickly and easily developed lasting friendships with people of all ages across the country. He inspired family members and many others to serve the country and would often remind others that "Freedom is not Free." He was a strong proponent of local businesses showing their support for state and country by flying the flag. Willard loved to reminisce about his military days and his travels across the country. Everyone enjoyed his stories and he brought smiles to everyone he interacted with. Willard's outgoing nature and love of life will be missed by many family and friends, near and far.
